As geologists, Bill and Liz Armstrong share a similar spirit, one that is dedicated to the purity of science and endless exploration. A wine lover, one day Bill woke up and realized he wanted more – he wanted to be a wine producer. This decided, he set about on a deliberate search for the perfect plot of land. While studying oenology in his spare time, his palate quickly took a liking to wines from the Rhone region in France, particularly Southern Rhone.

When initially setting out on this crazy quest to create wine, Liz and Bill did not have their sights set on any particular wine region. This was a search for the ultimate American terroir that would produce world-class wine. The two things they knew for sure were that they loved wines made from Rhone varietals, and being geologists, they understood the importance terroir plays in making world class wines.

After extensive research they kept coming back to Paso Robles for the weather, unique soils, hilliness, and extreme temperature swings. In 2004 the epoch officially began with the purchase of Paderewski Vineyard and in 2008 they spread roots to Catapult Vineyard. The legacies of York Mountain and Ignacy Paderewski are honored and carried through Epoch wines. What they were not expecting when they found this plot of land was that the Paso culture totally jived with their personalities. The entrepreneurial, collaborative spirit along with the rodeo, All-American vibe had Bill and Liz feeling at home from day one.

After an extensive international search Bill and Liz found their dream partner in winemaker Jordan Fiorentini. The Epoch winemaking mission and unique vineyards stole Jordan’s heart. Passionate, dedicated, and not afraid to push the envelope, Jordan brings an enthusiastic and experienced spirit to Epoch Estate Wines. Her palate is one that speaks to her through shapes; having an awesome artistic side, Jordan now draws her Tasting Notes in addition to writing about each wine. (How cool is that?!) She earned her spurs working at her family’s winery in Georgia, then Araujo Estate in Napa Valley, Antinori Winery in Italy (where she met her husband), and most recently as head winemaker at Chalk Hill Estates in Sonoma.

The 2014 Estate Blend comes from the original vineyards the Armstrong family purchased, Paderewski and Catapult in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. The blend is 36% Syrah, 36% Mourvedre, 22% Grenache, and 6% Tempranillo. This blend shows a full range of flavor: red plum, berry and surprising watermelon fruit flavors. The earthy and grounding elements of this blend include black olive, earth, sweet leather, brown spice and meat.

This wine’s full body goes perfectly with melt-on-your-tounge chocolate so when your kids come back from trick or treating, steal away a couple Hershey’s Kisses to pair with this bold red blend.
